Time after finals

My last paper was on Tuesday morning – it was the Chemistry options. The exam period is now over, and in fact, the entire IB Diploma is over also (except if there has to be a retake, which I hope will not happen). I have heard some reflections about the test week; one category of students think it went excellent on some papers, some are unsure, and some think that it could have gone much better. I think that it so difficult to make any predictions at this stage, since languages are 55% of work that is done before the finals, while for instance in the sciences, paper 1 might be a bit tricky to predict. Well, qui vivra verra.

It feels that the time restriction during tests is something that could be changed since it does not allow all knowledge to be tested, that is, the exam turns to some sort of competition. This is understandable, and will most certainly occur in our future lives. Maybe IB wants us teach to take quick decisions, since after all,

Delayed decisions inevitably lose their positive quality (Art of War for Managers)

or as Sun Tzu says:

Hence what is valued in war is a quick victory, not prolonged operations (Sun Tzu)

But on the other hand, if more time is given during say Math exams, you are “either able to solve a problem or you are not” (a teacher at Katte). A Russian mathematician (I do not remember his name unfortunately) said that if mathematics competitions would exist during his youth, he would most likely not be a mathematician. This applies to other subjects too; you can be very good at a subject but the test might say otherwise.

I think everyone taking the IB should be very proud of everything that they know (and not be unhappy about what they do not know), since after all 3 years have elapsed and even if some did not aim for high grades will still have gained a lot of knowledge. At this stage though, I cannot image where I will apply my Chemistry knowledge, nor literature terms like “extern fokalisering” and “intern fokalisering”, but I start to realize that knowing these details is very important for a dialog with different people. You do not need to be an expert in a field in order to start a conversation. So I suppose that when you happen to sit close to chemists or physicists at some point in life, you will be able to understand at least what topic they are talking about – the rest they will explain to you since they are most likely experts in their area and are very passionate about it.

Anyway, the test week was quite an interesting challenge which was fun to undertake. I must confess though that during the second week, my plan received some changes. Before, I had Plan A and Plan B, but during that week, I added another part to it, namely Plan C. At this moment, I do not want to disclose any of them, but I can tell that Plan A is what I want to execute in the first place. This is very secretive, but everyone must have some secrets. As Jaroslav Hašek said: “Skromnost krášlí muže/../,” which can be translated as “Modesty adorns a man /../“.

Otherwise, it feels great and I have already started to develop the foundation for Snippette.NET (a project together with Melody P. and David P.) and I have also re-assumed my work on Serial Key Manager and will certainly continue developing Mathos Project. My goal is to make use of the time during the summer break (or maybe we should say summer holiday) and be as productive as possible.

In conclusion, these two years have been amazing and it has always been a pleasure to be surrounded by very motivated and clever people every day! Computer programming at Katedralskolan, Uppsala

Hi,

You might have seen the poster about Computer programming on the IB board (and other places). Let me introduce you what it is going to be about!

The idea of this project is to create a group of students interested in programming, mathematics, computer science, etc, and allow them to discuss the current technologies, attend lectures about different programming languages (including cool stuff in math), and investigate related topics (and present them in the group).

There is a big benefit for current IB12 to join this group, as it will count as Creativity (to attend the meetings) and Service (when you talk in front of others about something that you like).

I will encourage everyone to practice on presenting different topics in front of others in a group, as it is an important skill in many fields!

I hope this short summary has given you some introduction, however, if you would get any question, please always ask me (contact here)!

Received new books to read over summer

The test result on the physics test encouraged me to focus on definitions of simple concepts and, of course, on a deeper understanding of them. Therefore, I got two new books which will hopefully help. The one I am focusing on right now is the textbook(2nd editions, 2012), as I need it for the lab rapport (it explains everything very well). The second book (the study guide, 2nd edition, 2012) is by one of the authors of the textbook will serve as a revision guide for each chapter. Reading the textbook will be one of the tasks for the summer, although my Extended Essay and my other projects are important as well.

Working with Windows 8

Windows 8 is an amazing operating system. It is similar to Windows 7, although it requires a new kind of approach. Below, I have included some of the pictures taken from the metro UI menu.

Writing the outline for the Extended Essay

Yesterday, I was writing my Extended Essay outline. My topic is related to number theory (mathematics), although my approach to my question is a bit different. Through the entire research process, I have not considered any other research papers, and in the beginning I wanted to do the research with a pen, a paper, and a computer. I can say that the computation power has helped me a lot in this research, and I my mind people should appreciate computation proofs as they appreciate traditional mathematical proofs. Computer is like a tool that will hopefully simplify a lot of other tasks in the nearest feature!

Individual oral presentation is over!

With the words like “Congratulation!” and “excellent language and structure” I left the examination room, and thought that now it is simply over. To my disappointment, I have realized that I have a test in Mathematics HL and History HL, which did not scary me that much, but when I gave this another minute of thought, I came to the conclusion that I have to finish my CAS folder, Physics lab rapport, Swedish Written Assignment form (which means I will need to compose it in less than two weeks), English Written Task, and to review the EE outline, although I think I am done with it.

C’est la vie, I will continue with my preparation for the exams tomorrow!

Preparation for the Individual oral commentary

Individual oral commentary is one of the important tasks, which influences 15 percent of the final grade. This means, having a good mark on all internal assessments will influence the final grade in a positive way. Therefore, I am spending a lot of time on it, by reading the potential poems and extracts. In my case, as I am a standard level student,  I might get either an extract from Death of a Salesman or one of the poems by Emily Dickinson. Here are some pictures of the setting around my desk.
